The Universidad Católica de Temuco is currently considered to be one of the most important universities in the 9th Region, achieving a high standard and academic excellence in the training of professionals. It is also accredited by the Comisión Nacional de Acreditación (2010 – 2015) (National Accreditation Commission) and has a wide educational offering split across 7 Faculties, a School of Health Sciences, an Institute of Theological Studies and the Science and Humanities Baccalaureate Programme.

RESEARCH

Connected with its regional context, UC Temuco currently has four research centres which constitute priority areas for scientific work.

The Food Production Centre addresses production of vegetables and rearing of animals with an emphasis on nutrition, reproduction and health. One of its principal focusses is food quality and safety.

The Environmental Studies Centre carries out scientific research in various fields of environmental science. It emphasises the study of catchment areas, soil usage, and water and land resources in order to contribute to the conservation of water and biodiversity within the central and southern regions of Chile.

The Renewable Energy Centre studies new sources of energy with a focus on biofuels produced from biomass and their environmental impact. It also looks at the development of new technologies for reducing emissions, with an emphasis on air quality.

The Inter-ethnic and Intercultural Studies Centre aims to study, explain and strengthen understanding of intercultural and inter-ethnic relations, and their consequent application in the lives of individuals and their social groups.

UNIVERSITY ARTISTIC GROUPS

The university’s artistic groups aim to contribute to students’ personal development and to their general competencies and social skills.

VIVA COMUNA PROGRAMME

The aim of the Viva Comuna programme is to promote the cultural development of the region’s communities by working together and participating with local cultural representatives, giving voice to the opinions of the community through the varied artistic and cultural offerings which the different departments and faculties of UC Temuco produce.

The programme plans and implements an annual artistic and cultural calendar across twelve communities, and to compliment this, develops initiatives which enhance the cultural management of the region.

VAS Programme

Community Outreach (Vinculación a la Sociedad, VAS) is an academic/cultural programme whose aim it is to create and maintain a formal, friendly and voluntary space for cooperation with community organisations through the city of Temuco’s parishes. It supports people’s personal and social development, thus strengthening the institution’s stamp on its graduate academics and professionals, and complementing the students’ competencies in their disciplines.

AULA MAGNA ARTISTIC PROGRAMME

Shaped by artistic and cultural activities in UC Temuco’s Aula Magna (main auditorium). Includes seasons of film and music, choral festivals, dance meetings, theatre functions and concerts, among other artistic events, all free for the regional community.

ART GALLERY

UC Temuco’s Art Gallery is an important space for the artistic endeavour of the region. It comprises a 200 square metre room which was designed for purpose, where many varieties of visual arts are displayed, both from regional artists and those of national prominence.

MUSICAL ARTS ACADEMY

Its mission is to provide highly specialised training in the realm of musical interpretation. It also promotes the twenty five strong student choir, and the Symphony Choir which comprises sixty professionals.
